Staglin has been one of the most sought after wines in the country. Planted to grapes in 1860s at the base of Mount John, the tallest peak in the Mayacamas range, the estate is now managed by David Abreu, the vineyard manager to the Napa Valley stars. Like several others under Abreu's skilled hand, the Staglin property is certified organic, and is in the same elite company as Araujo, Bryant Family, Screaming Eagle, Viader, Harlan, Colgin, Pahlmeyer, and several others. "The 2009 Staglin fills the glass with a brooding swirl of rich, dark fruits, resinous herbs and rain dampened loam illuminated by polished hints of sweet baking spices, aromatic woods and exotic liqueurs. A juicy and inviting entry builds to a generous, balanced yet lively mid-palate that slides towards a graceful and fine-grained finish of well developed and classy tannins. Complex and beautiful now, this wine will generously reward sufficient decanting and additional time in bottle." 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot. aged in 100% French oak barrels: 94% new, 6% used for 21 months. In addition to the flagship Staglin Family Vineyard label, they also produce a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay under the Salus label. Named after the Roman goddess of health and wellbeing, they donate 100% of the proceeds from the sales of these wines toward fundraising for mental health research, a cause that is very near and dear to their hearts.
